Privacy Policy

1. INTRODUCTION

“Honda” (defined below) is committed to protecting your personal information in accordance with the Information Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 2020 (“Privacy Act”). 

“Personal Information” is defined in the Privacy Act to mean information about an identifiable individual. If the definition in the Privacy Act changes, references to “Personal Information” in this Privacy Policy will have the updated meaning from the Privacy Act. 

This Privacy Policy describes how we manage any personal information we hold about you (including personal information collected from and via the Honda Connect app and connected services and information automatically generated by connected vehicles where those services are activated). It does not apply to personal information held or collected about our employees.

Who is "Honda"?

“Honda” and “we” means, as applicable: 

  • Honda New Zealand Ltd, 455 Broadway, Newmarket, Auckland, New Zealand (“Honda New Zealand”).

2. WHAT PERSONAL INFORMATION DOES HONDA COLLECT?

Honda only collects personal information where it is reasonably necessary for one or more of our functions or activities, or where collection is required or authorised by law. 

Honda may collect and hold personal information about you, including but not limited to the following types of information, depending on the nature of your interactions with Honda: 

  • Name.
  • Address.
  • Gender.
  • Age or date of birth.
  • Telephone number.
  • Email address.
  • Driver licence details.
  • Transaction details associated with your purchase or use of Honda products or services, including warranty information, aftersales products and services, and payment or financial details.
  • Information relating to your access to and use of Honda digital platforms, applications, and connected or vehicle‑related services, including account credentials, vehicle location, driving or usage behaviour, voice or command inputs, and vehicle condition, performance, diagnostic, and malfunction data.
  • Information you provide through enquiries, customer surveys, research activities, competitions, promotions, or marketing campaigns; and
  • Any other personal information that you provide to Honda, or that Honda is required or permitted to collect under law, regulation, or contractual arrangements.

3. HOW DOES HONDA COLLECT PERSONAL INFORMATION?

Honda will generally collect your personal information directly from you, including when you:   

    • Interact with Honda, including via our website at honda.co.nz, (“Honda Website”), social media, tradeshows and events, telephone, email or in writing.  
    • visit a Honda Store, Service Store or Service Centre (“Honda outlet” refers to any store, shop front and other physical presence that is operated by Honda, a Honda Representative, a Honda agent or a Honda franchisee) and provide your personal information to one of its staff for a purpose that requires disclosure to Honda. 
    • purchase a Honda vehicle or service. 
    • purchase Honda genuine parts, merchandise, accessories or event tickets.  
    • register for a Honda customer or member account and provide information through that account. 
    • register for, and use, the Honda Connect app and connected services. 
    • make an enquiry, request or complaint, including to book a test drive or download a vehicle brochure. 
    • participate in our customer surveys, research focus groups, competitions and marketing campaigns. 
    • are engaged to supply products and services to Honda. 
    • apply for a current or future career at Honda. 
    • supply personal information as part of contractual arrangements; and 
    • apply to be, or are appointed, a “Honda Representative” of Honda under a Honda Representative Agreement, or an “agent” of Honda under a Honda Agreement (as applicable). 

    Honda may also collect your personal information from third parties, such as Honda Representatives and agents, our service providers, your finance or insurance company, regulatory authorities, road traffic authorities and from marketing lists that we legally acquire. 

    If you provide us with personal information about another person (such as a joint vehicle owner or secondary driver), we rely on you to obtain that person’s consent to the disclosure of their personal information to us and notify them that the applicable privacy collection statement and this Privacy Policy contain information about our collection of their personal information.  The privacy collection statement of Honda New Zealand can be obtained here.

    Automatic collection from connected vehicles

    Where Honda Connect or connected vehicle services are activated, Honda may also collect personal information automatically generated by the vehicle while it is being driven or operated. This information is collected without the individual needing to actively provide the information at the time, and may be transmitted on a regular or continuous basis for safety, quality monitoring, diagnostics, warranty, customer support, and product improvement purposes.

    4. HOW DOES HONDA USE AND DISCLOSE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

    Honda will generally use and disclose your personal information for the primary purpose for which it was collected. Honda may also use or disclose your personal information for related secondary purposes where you would reasonably expect such use or disclosure, or where the use or disclosure is otherwise permitted, required, or authorised under the Privacy Act 2020.

    4.1 Use of personal information

    Honda may use your personal information including, but not limited to, for the following purposes:

    • To provide, or assist in providing, products and services to you, including verifying your identity.
    • To provide and operate the Honda Connect app, connected services, and related digital platforms, where you have signed up to receive those services.
    • To provide customer support and support to Honda Representatives and agents.
    • To analyse vehicle purchase, ownership, and service history for customer experience, safety, quality, and improvement purposes.
    • To respond to your enquiries, requests, or complaints.
    • For administrative, operational, customer relations, marketing, planning, training, product development, research, analytics, and business improvement purposes.
    • For product warranty registration, administration, safety recalls, and field service actions.
    • To conduct customer surveys, research activities, and focus groups.
    • To administer competitions, promotions, and events in accordance with applicable terms and conditions.
    • To consider applications for employment or engagement with Honda.
    • For any purpose for which you have provided consent, where consent is required
    • For any other purpose where use of the information is required or authorised by law.

    4.2 Disclosure of personal information

    Honda may disclose personal information, where it is lawful and reasonable to do so, for the purposes described above, including to:

    • Other Honda‑related entities.
    • Honda Representatives, agents, franchisees, and authorised partners.
    • Regulatory, government, or law enforcement authorities (including road traffic authorities), where required or authorised by law.
    • Third‑party service providers and contractors that support Honda’s operations, including IT, data hosting, analytics, call centre, marketing, research, logistics, roadside assistance, warranty, and insurance providers.
    • Emergency service providers, where necessary to respond to vehicle safety incidents or connected service features; and
    • Professional advisers, auditors, insurers, and consultants.

    Honda requires its service providers and contractors to handle personal information securely and in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020, and to use personal information only for authorised purposes.

    5. DOES HONDA DISCLOSE PERSONAL INFORMATION OVERSEAS?

    Honda operates as part of a global organisation. From time to time, your personal information may be shared with Honda‑related entities, including our parent company, Honda Motor Co. in Japan, or stored on secure systems operated by our service providers that may be located overseas, including Japan, Singapore, and the United States.

    When personal information is transferred or stored outside New Zealand, Honda takes reasonable steps to ensure that your personal information is protected and handled in a way that is consistent with New Zealand privacy laws. This includes using contractual protections, appropriate security measures, and restricting use of your information to legitimate business purposes only.

    Honda also uses reputable cloud‑based systems to store and manage information. Cloud service providers and storage locations are carefully selected and assessed to ensure they meet our security, compliance, and regulatory requirements before being used.

    5.1 RETENTION AND DELETION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

    Honda keeps personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes for which it was collected, or as required or permitted by law, and in accordance with Honda’s internal retention and record keeping policies.

    When personal information is no longer required, Honda takes reasonable steps to securely delete or de‑identify the information in accordance with our data governance and record‑keeping practices.

    6. DOES HONDA DE-IDENTIFY INFORMATION?

    Honda may de‑identify personal information so that it can no longer reasonably be linked to an individual. Once information has been de‑identified, it is no longer treated as personal information.

    Honda may use and disclose de‑identified information in the normal course of its business. This includes combining or aggregating de‑identified information to analyse trends and patterns, generate reports, improve products and services, support research and development, and provide statistical insights to Honda or third parties.

    7. CUSTOMER SURVEYS AND FOCUS GROUPS

    7.1 Purpose of surveys and focus groups

    Honda conducts customer surveys and focus groups to better understand customer experiences, improve our products and services, and enhance the overall Honda customer journey. Participation in surveys and focus groups is generally voluntary.

    7.2 How surveys are conducted

    Honda may engage specialist third‑party market research companies to conduct customer surveys or focus groups on our behalf. These providers operate under contractual and confidentiality obligations and are only given access to the minimum personal information necessary to conduct the survey, focus group, or send an invitation to participate.

    7.3 Use of survey information

    Personal information collected through surveys or focus groups may be used by Honda to analyse feedback, identify trends, and improve products, services, and customer experiences. Where appropriate, survey responses may be shared with Honda Representatives, agents, or service providers who are involved in delivering or improving the Honda customer experience.

    In most cases, survey results are combined and reported in aggregated, non‑identifying form.

    7.4 Retention of survey information

    Honda retains personal information collected through surveys and focus groups only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purposes for which it was collected, or as otherwise required or permitted by law. Once survey information is no longer required, Honda takes reasonable steps to securely delete or de‑identify it.

    7.5 Opt‑out options

    You can choose not to participate in surveys or focus groups and may opt out of receiving survey invitations at any time by following the opt‑out instructions provided in the communication or by contacting Honda using the details set out in this Privacy Policy.

    7.6 Security and third‑party obligations

    Honda requires external research providers to handle personal information securely and in accordance with New Zealand privacy laws. These providers are not permitted to use personal information for their own purposes or beyond what is necessary to conduct the survey or focus group on Honda’s behalf.

    8. MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

    Honda will only send you marketing communications where you have opted in to receive them. Where you have provided your consent, Honda may use your personal information to inform you about our products, services, promotions, surveys, and events. Marketing communications may be sent by mail, telephone, email, or SMS.

    You can opt out of receiving marketing communications from Honda at any time by using the unsubscribe option included in the marketing communication you receive or by contacting Honda using the details set out in this Privacy Policy. Opt‑out requests will be processed as soon as reasonably practicable.

    Honda operates through several separate legal entities. Your marketing preferences apply to the specific Honda entity that collected your personal information, unless otherwise stated at the time of collection. Honda may use your personal information to personalise marketing communications, including tailoring content based on your interests, interactions with Honda, vehicle ownership, and use of our products and services.

    9. COOKIES

    You can generally visit the Honda Website without identifying yourself. However, some areas of the website may require you to provide personal information so that we can provide the products, services, or information you have requested, or to register and verify you in member or customer areas of the website.

    Honda uses cookies and similar technologies to support website functionality, analyse how our websites are used, and deliver relevant content and marketing. Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device when you visit a website.

    9.1 Types of cookies we use

    Honda uses the following categories of cookies on its websites: 

    • Essential cookies

    Essential cookies are required for the Honda Website to function properly. They support core features such as page navigation, security, and access to secure areas of the website. Without these cookies, some parts of the website may not work as intended.

     

    • Performance and analytics cookies

    Performance and analytics cookies collect information about how visitors use the Honda Website. This includes information such as pages visited, time spent on the site, browser type, operating system, IP address, device identifiers, and referring websites.

    Honda uses this information to understand website usage, improve content and functionality, and measure the effectiveness of promotional activities. Honda uses Google Analytics for website analytics and promotional performance measurement.

    Marketing and social media cookies are used to collect information about interactions with Honda content and advertisements. These cookies help deliver personalised content, track advertising performance, and support Honda’s marketing activities across websites and social media platforms.

    Honda may use cookies provided by third‑party platforms such as Meta (including Facebook and Instagram). These providers may collect information about your interactions with Honda content on social media and other websites. This may include using information collected through cookies and similar technologies to deliver relevant advertising on third-party platforms.

     

    • Personal information and cookies

    Cookies may collect information that can be considered personal information, such as online identifiers, IP addresses, and browsing behaviour. Honda uses this information to personalise content, generate analytical insights, and improve website performance and marketing effectiveness.

     

    • Statistical information

    For statistical purposes, Honda collects information about website activity through cookies. This may include:

    • IP address or domain name.
    • Browser type and operating system.
    • Date, time, and duration of visits; and
    • Pages viewed and resources accessed.
    • On its own, this information does not directly identify you, but it helps Honda analyse trends and improve its websites and services.

     

    • Managing cookies

    You can manage or disable cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block cookies, delete stored cookies, or receive a notification before a cookie is placed on your device. Please note that disabling cookies may affect the functionality of the Honda Website and limit access to certain features.

     

    • Third-Party Marketing Platforms: Honda may use third-party platforms and service providers to deliver marketing communications and advertising on our behalf.

    10. LINKS FROM THE HONDA WEBSITES

    The Honda Website may contain links to third‑party websites that are not operated or controlled by Honda.

    Honda is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those third‑party websites, and this Privacy Policy does not apply to them. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third‑party websites before providing personal information.

    11. HOW CAN YOU ACCESS AND CORRECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

    You have the right to request access to, or correction of, the personal information that Honda holds about you. You may do this by contacting Honda using the details set out in this Privacy Policy.

    You do not need to provide a reason for requesting access or correction. However, Honda may require reasonable proof of your identity before processing your request.

    In some circumstances, Honda may not be able to provide access to all personal information we hold about you, or an exception under the Privacy Act 2020 may apply (for example, where providing access would impact the privacy of another individual). If this occurs, Honda will explain the reasons to you in writing.

    If access to personal information is provided, Honda may charge a reasonable fee that reflects the effort required to make the information available.

    Honda will respond to all requests for access or correction within 20 working days, in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020.

    12. COMPLAINTS

    If you have a concern or wish to make a complaint about how Honda has handled your personal information, you may contact Honda’s Privacy Officer using the contact details set out in this Privacy Policy.

    Honda takes privacy complaints seriously and will investigate all complaints and aim to resolve them as soon as reasonably practicable.

    If you are not satisfied with Honda’s response to your complaint, you have the right to make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (New Zealand). Further information is available at www.privacy.org.nz.

    13. SECURITY

    13.1 Industry Standards

    Honda understands the importance of protecting the privacy and security of your personal information. We use appropriate technical, administrative, and physical security measures that are designed to safeguard personal information we hold from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.

    Personal information is stored in secure environments and access is restricted to authorised personnel who require access for legitimate business purposes.

    13.2 Internet security

    While Honda takes reasonable steps to protect personal information transmitted to us electronically, no method of transmission over the Internet is completely secure. As a result, Honda cannot guarantee the absolute security of personal information transmitted online.

    Honda will continue to maintain and review its security practices to help protect personal information and reduce the risk of unauthorised access, use, or disclosure.

    14. ANONYMITY

    Where it is lawful and practicable, Honda will provide you with the option to interact with us without identifying yourself, or by using a pseudonym. In some circumstances, Honda may need to collect personal information in order to provide products or services, verify your identity, meet legal obligations, or respond to requests or enquiries.

    15. DEALING WITH UNSOLICITED INFORMATION 

    If Honda receives personal information that we did not request (unsolicited personal information), Honda will determine whether the information could have been lawfully collected under the Privacy Act 2020.

    If the information could not have been lawfully collected, Honda will destroy or de‑identify the information as soon as reasonably practicable, unless it is unlawful or unreasonable to do so.

    16. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

    Honda may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, systems, services, or legal requirements.

    Where a change to this Privacy Policy is significant, Honda will take reasonable steps to notify users, such as by updating the policy on our website or through other appropriate communication channels. Significant changes may include, for example:

    • changes to the way personal information is collected, used, or disclosed.
    • changes resulting from new or amended laws or regulatory requirements.
    • changes affecting your rights in relation to your personal information.

    Any updated Privacy Policy will apply from the date it is published. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how Honda manages personal information.
